Bagnoli) che rielaborerà la leggenda dell'"Uomo con la maschera di ferro".
Vi diamo un indizio: Leonardo di Caprio non c'entra!

A Giugno e Luglio, invece, prosegue il "countdown" verso il 2000, con una
lotta secolare tra due sette segrete: una cerca la distruzione del mondo, e
l'altra invece vuole evitarla! Martin Mystère si trova tra due fuochi,
mentre si avvicina l'ultimo solstizio d'estate del ventesimo

A Luglio e Agosto leggeremo una nuova storia di Castelli e Torti che ci
rivelerà quali segreti nascondono per l'anno 2000 certi programmi di
computer...

Nei mesi di Settembre, Ottobre, Novembre e Dicembre vedremo finalmente lo
sviluppo e la conclusione del mistero del "conto alla rovescia" che sin dal
marzo del 1998 ("Il caso Majorana") ha turbato i sonni dei fedeli lettori
del Buon Vecchio Zio Marty (e naturalmente del BVZM stesso).

suscita in chiunque un'irrefrenabile ilarità. Com'è tradizione, ritroveremo
anche l'irresistibile Angie e la mysteriosa base di "Altrove".

GIGANTE N.5 (uscita: settembre)

Una mysteriosa immagine compare all'improvviso dal nulla nelle menti di
varie persone, in varie parti del mondo. Cosa collega tra di loro queste
persone? Nel tentativo di scoprirlo, Martin Mystère si troverà coinvolto in
una delle avventure più bizzarre della sua carriera: la ricerca
dell'"albero della vita"!

ALMANACCO DEL MISTERO 2000 (uscita: novembre)

E' il primo almanacco del 2000: cosa ci riserverà il futuro? Beh, il
"docteur Mystère" lo sapeva già più di un secolo fa. In questa avventura
l'antenato del BVZM e il suo fido Cigale giungeranno addirittura sulla
luna! Ma attenzione: qualunque cosa vi immaginiate non sarà così.
Aspettatevi ogni sorpresa per non venire colti di sorpresa.

Mentre continua freneticamente la preparazione di “Martin Mystère” - the Book”,
un enorme e lussuosissimo volume che raccoglie i racconti di Martin Mystère
illustrati da Giuseppe Palumbo (Edizioni Phoenix), la Rizzoli annuncia l’uscita
nella collana BUR di una serie dedicata ai classici del fumetto.
A Luglio uscirà il primo gruppo dei volumi, tra i quali “Martin Mystère”,
con un’edizione riveduta e corredata da un’amplia sezione critica dell’avventura
“Il segreto di San Nicola”.

MARTIN IN USA
Dopo una lunga gestazione, sta per uscire il primo volume della versione americana di “Martin Mystère”, una miniserie di sei albi in bianco e nero e in formato cm. 14 x 21. La collana pubblicherà i seguenti racconti, corredati dalla rubrica “Martin’s Mysteries”.

Hi everybody. My name is Alfredo Castelli, and I am the faithful biographer of Martin Mystèry, or – if you prefer – of “Good Ol’ Uncle Marty”, as his many fans in Italy do affectionately call him. I know Martin from 1978, and, since then, I unceasingly related his extrahordinary adventures (adding - as he says - “Molta farina del mio sacco”, “Much of my own”). Well, surely some detail of his exploits has been enriched with a little bit of fantasy, but I can guarantee that their substance doesn’t change. There’s no need to introduce my friend Martin, as he will introduce himself with his own actions; you’ll discover that he’s a detective in a very unusual sense of the word, as he doesn’t investigate police cases, but deals with the great enigmas which have never been solved, ranging from archeological ones (Who built Stonehenge?) to historical ones (Who was the Man in the Iron Mask?), to esoteric ones (What is the secret of Graal?), to the field of UFOs, ESP, magic. Let me just add one thing: what I most appreciate in Martin is his ability to discover a “mystery” side in everything, not only in an Egyptian Phyramid or in a Mayan Temple (that’s easy!), but in an alley just around the corner, in a stranger he met on the subway, or in an old object he bought in a garage sale. My friend Martin is endowed with that rare gift that is the “sense of wonder”; his weltanschaung may be resumed in just four words: “Nothing is what it seems”. I wonder how Martin’s adventures will be received in the U. S.: I do perfectly realize that his stories are very different from the ones American readers are used to. My friend Martin’s tales are in fact novels in comic form, with lots of words to read, following a tradition inaugurated by American characters in the thirties (some “Brick Bradford” or “Phantom” episodes lasted for a year or so) and, oddly enough, fiorgotten in the US and carried on in Italy. More: apart the book you’re now reading (and that, hopefully, you’ve bought), which features a complete story, from the next issue on you’ll have to undergo the shock of “to be continued” stories (some are over 200 pages long!): so a story may begin in a issue, follow in a second issue, finish in the first pages of a third issue, with a new story beginning in the same issue’s following pages. A third shock: artists will change from story to story, beginning with Giancarlo Alessandrini, who drew the episode in this issue – the story which introduced the character back in 1982. Martin Mystery is in fact published in Italy in monthly 94 page books, without counting a Special Summer Issue, a Fall “Giant” Issue, a Winter “Almanac” and countless short stories produced for different magazines, for a minimum of 1,600 new pages every year. Not even Superman could draw so fast to mantain this pace. Will you get used to all this? Well, surely I hope so: because, following Martin Mystèry, you’ll have the possibility to discover a whole world of mysteries: just to arouse your curiosity, I compiled a list of facts and characters with whom Good Ol’ Uncle Martin has already dealt in his long Italian career (about 23,000 pages produced by now). I’m sure that you too, will be able to make their acquaintance if you have the goodness to continue and reading this series. I look forward to it, and, in the name of my royalties I thank you all. I MYSTERI DI MYSTERE - Il “vero” BILLIKEN
Nel 1908 Florence Pretz, giovane illustratrice di Chicago risoluta a sfondare con disegni in “stile giapponese” (un’antesignana!), inventò un personaggio battezzato Billiken, The God Of Things As They Ought To Be, una specie di benevolo gnomo dal volto piatto e dalle grosse gambe. Il disegno fu venduto alla Billiken Co. di Chicago, e utilizzato per realizzare una statuetta portafortuna di ceramica (“I am the god of luckiness, so always keep me nigh / Misfortune’s frown will disappear, at one flash from my eye / Be sure that I am on the spot, when projects you begin / I am the god of luckiness, my name is Billiken”). Il suo successo fu immediato, e a essa seguì un vasto merchandising che comprendeva, tra l’altro, un salvadanaio di ghisa, orologi, bambole (ne vennero vendute duecentomila in sei mesi); dal portafortuna prese nome la squadra sportiva dell’Università di St Louis, fondata nel 1911 e attuale detentrice del marchio. La fama di Billiken varcò i confini nazionali: in Argentina esordì Billiken (1916), la più antica rivista per ragazzi ancora regolarmente pubblicata, e in Giappone esso entrò addirittura a far parte del pantheon delle divinità locali: un tempio in suo onore venne elevato a Osaka, nel distretto di Shinsekai. Passata la moda, l’origine del personaggio fu dimenticata; siccome uno scultore esquimese di nome “Happy Jack” Angokwa-ghuk si era specializzato nell’esecuzione di riproduzioni in avorio di Billiken, esso è stato ritenuto per anni una divinità di quel popolo.
